TWITTER

Anyone who knows me, will know I have quite an unhealthy obsession with Twitter. The social networking site even helped me finalise my choice of phone upgrade. I think twitter is just a great opportunity to keep up to date and in touch with people at any place or time. Twitter has a short 140-character limit, which means you don’t have the endless 1000 word blogs. All you get is small snap shots into people’s worlds.

Twitter has also become home to many celebrities over the last year. I believe this is a great chance for fans to feel more connected to the ‘super-human’ people we see on our TV screen and in our magazines. Even the term, to ‘follow’ someone on twitter helps people feel more connected to others. This could because the word ‘follow’ makes you feel like your almost stalking someone and that your seeing and reading things that you otherwise wouldn’t be able to see.

Celebrities such as Lily Allen have even used the site for treasure trails. She left cryptic clues on her twitter page, telling her followers of places around Los Angeles where they would be able to find free tickets to some of her shows. Others use the site for promotion of their tours, signings and CD releases. While some just post pictures of their latest activates and random thoughts. I think Twitter is a great way of breaking down the invisible barriers between celebrities and fans. Everyone and anyone can create, follow and see someone’s twitter page (unless purposely set to private) this means thousands of people potentially have to chance to see a 140 character statement you make on the world and can comment you back on it.

I think twitter can also be used to discover and raise the awareness of new artists. Perez Hilton recently added the link of Sliimy’s video cover of Britney Spears Womanizer to his twitter page and asked his followers (1,593,304 people) to re-tweet (to repost his tweet on their page) this means that Sliimy’s video could possible be seen by 1,593,304 people and the followers of some of those people and so an and so on. Sliimys video has now received 30,583 views within only one day of it being posted on his Myspace. Some of his other videos have received the same viewing numbers but have been posted of over a year. Surely this shows the power of social networking and how a single tweet from a dominant person on twitter can help launch the career of virtually unknown artist.

Over all I love twitter and it’s a great form of social networking, and I hope its here to stay. I think everyone should have a twitter account, everyone go make one NOW!
